Brendan's Team versus Wally's Wonders
After embarrassing week 1 losses, both teams took
the field with a lot to prove. A belter
of a track at the WACA certainly helped the batsmen, and Grant Flower the first
to take advantage with a well crafted 103.
Michael Bevan was also at his busy best, scurrying towards a
well-deserved hundred until Ryder snaffled him head high at backwards point off
the bowling of Jack White for 99.
Warwick Armstrong wrapped up the tail with his inquisitive medium
pacers. Bevan and May used the bouncy
track to their advantage in the Wonders’ reply, each man picking up four
wickets - Bevan may have sympathised with his victim as Armstrong was trapped
just 3 shy of a deserved hundred.
Nerves were evident on both sides as neither seemed prepared to risk
defeat in search of victory, although Hick’s powerful 78 in the Brendan second
innings pleased the crowd for a while.
A safe declaration left the Wonders with over 300 to chase, which they
declined to do, settling instead for a comfortable draw to get both teams off
the mark for the season.

Albert t.o.w. versus Ryan's Allstars
Something about week 2 caused batsman to lose their
heads in the 90s - this time it was Nathan Astle who missed out on a milestone
by nicking Sydney Barnes to Gavaskar when on 99. The great Barnes picked up 8 wickets in the Albert first innings,
following up with another 6 in the second.
After 9 wickets in week 1 Barnes now has 23 in two matches, putting him
far ahead of the competition as the game’s dominant bowler. Another bowler to start fast has been
Albert’s Allan Steel, who took his 11th wicket of the season in this
match, but it was not enough to stop the Allstars winning their second of the
season fairly comfortably. Barnes’
bowling will long be remembered, but Archie McLaren scored 63 and 113 not out
to seal the victory, and openers Lawry and Gavaskar batted well again. With their lineup currently firing on all
cylinders the Allstars certainly look early favourites.

AllroundersXI versus Coights Heroes
The Allrounders won a thriller in week 1, whereas
Coights lost a game that they might easily have won, so this looked like a
great matchup on paper. However, Viv
Richards saw to it that only one team was going to have a sniff of victory,
authoring a chancelessly handsome knock of 256 to guide the allrounders to 538
over the first two days. Raja and Duff,
as they had in week 1, added valuable late-order runs. As so often seems to happen to teams chasing
a big total, the Heroes collapsed in their reply. Only Taylor of the top order failed to reach double figures, and
only he lost his wicket blamelessly, as one batsman after another fell to rash
strokes. Nothing changed in the follow-on
innings, as the heroes folded again, ending up 123 runs short of making the
Allrounders bat again.

Logan Village CC versus Aussie Gurus
Dennis Lillee’s 11 wickets weren’t enough to stop
the Gurus from slipping to another defeat.
Allan Border ran out of partners for the third time in four innings, as
the Logan 1-2 punch of Larwood and Pollock was too much for the Aussie
batsmen. When the gate receipts come in
after week 3 the Gurus may need to pick up another batsman to stiffen their
struggling lineup, and possibly move Border up a place or two. The match started well enough for Aussie,
reducing Logan to 111-4, but a patient knock from Gus Logie and a typically
annoying piece of Ian Healy counterattacking rescued the innings. This was to prove decisive, as neither of
the innings that followed ever looked like becoming a big one. So batting last and needing 340 to win the
Gurus needed something special, and unsurprisingly didn’t get it. Stackpole chipped in with a nice 64, but
no-one else (the splendid Border excepted) batted with any authority and Logan
won comfortably for the second week in a row.
