An entertaining match which neither team ever managed
to dominate. Had Allan Border got more
support in either innings things could’ve been very different, but as the first
innings closed the left-hander was left high and dry on 68. This didn’t look like it would be important,
as the Allrounders reply capitulated to 78-5, but some big hitting from Frank
Iredale, grittily supported by Wasim Raja and Reggie Duff, steered them to the
relative safety of 188, still 132 behind.
As the Gurus came out for their second innings the thinking in the press
box was that they’d look for a swift 250 before having another crack at the
Allrounders, but the innings never really got started, and once again Border
was marooned in the sixties. 174 all
out meant the Allrounders would need over 300, which looked a tall order. As Viv Richards and Alec Stewart (both
looking uncharacteristically nervous) compiled a century opening partnership the
Allrounders began, perhaps for the first time in the match, to sense that
victory could be theirs. Steadily they proceeded, until Richards was struck on
the foot by a Mike Whitney yorker to be lbw for 56. Stewart was then given out without offering a shot, and the
wickets began to tumble, until Iredale, Duff, and particularly Raja, steadied the
ship once more to guide his team to an improbably thrilling eight wicket
victory.

Coights Heroes versus Logan Village CC
An incredible twelve match wickets for Shaun Pollock
set Logan on their way to an excellent six-wicket victory over the Heroes. Put into bat, Coights struggled early,
despite a handy 52 from Polly Umrigar.
Pollock and Harold Larwood, aided by some wonderful catching, tore into
the Heroes lineup, and only Keith Stackpole, with an unbeaten 48, offered much
resistance. The Logan reply started ominously,
as Marvan Atapattu, fresh from his four-catch fielding heroics, was lbw to Ian
Chappell second delivery. Eyebrows were
raised when Chappell took the new ball, but who are we to argue with results
like this? Australian Neil Hawke, bowling
vicious off cutters at a brisk pace, was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5-119,
but even he was unable to stop Logan recovering from 184-5 to 437 all out. That they did was due to a masterful century
from Arjuna Ranatunga, with vital assistance from Logie, Healy and Astle. The burly Sri Lankan batted as if he had a
point to prove, and by the time he was bowled through the gate by Hawke the
game seemed all but over. Not so –
Umrigar, who seems to be in the form of his life, notched up a wonderful
hundred at good pace, and Chappell was unlucky not to follow him as Pollock was
given the benefit on a close lbw shout.
Bruce Mitchell and Johnny Taylor played very well to get the score over
400, but that man Pollock wouldn’t go away, claiming 7 more wickets. Chappell tried to work his magic again in
the Logan reply, but Logan cruised to the target with minimal disruption.

Wally's Wonders versus Albert t.o.w.
9 wickets for Frank Tyson and a splendid 144 for
Carl Hooper were enough for Albert to crush the Wonders. A disappointing 195 was all Wally’s had to
show for their decision to bat first, particularly when Worrell and Ryder were
cruising at 124-1. Then Tyson and Steel
ripped the heart out of the middle order, and one could sense that Albert’s
smelt blood already. Len Hutton fell in the third over, but left-hander Jack
Gregory smashed a powerful 83 to regain the initiative. ‘Keeper Flower chipped in with 50, setting
the scene for Hooper’s act of demolition. He cruised to 144, and even Tauseef
Ahmed at number 10 made 40. Having been
overpowered at bat and tortured in the field, the Wonders managed to scratch
310 together, but this left Albert with an easy fifty to win the game, which
they did for the loss of two wickets.

Brendan's Team versus Ryan's Allstars
In another one-sided victory, Ryan’s Allstars beat
Brendan by an innings. Sunil Gavaskar
was the hero with 174 lordly runs, and Tim May became the first player this
season to dismiss himself, finally getting one through the gate after being
hammered all over the ground (by himself).
Brendan’s team made a dismal 178 first up, with only Tendulkar’s 82
worthy of a second look. The little
master, pitted against Gavaskar for the first time this year, managed to remain
calm as Barnes and Davidson wreaked havoc at the other end, but eventually lost
patience and was bowled by the latter whilst aiming for deep midwicket. Bill Lawry sprinted to 65 in the reply
before nibbling at a ball from Mullally that left him off the pitch, but
Gavaskar batted on, and on, finally replicating Lawry’s dismissal with a double
hundred in sight. Astle and Hick
offered some resistance in the third innings, but nobody else had the stomach
for the battle and the Allstars won without breaking sweat.
