Wally's Wonders versus Brendan's Team

 

Closing their first innings at 518, a revitalised Wonders XI looked to be well on their way to a second consecutive win.  Chris Cairns, really running into form now, knocked his first Timeless hundred and most of the top order contributed to an imposing total.  From 65/6 there was no way Brendan’s Team could have dreamed of escaping this match with a point, but first Hick then Parore fought back, and a total approaching 300 represented a clear change in the game’s momentum, regardless of the fact that a follow on innings still had to be negotiated.  It was as if a different team had came out to bat in the second innings, as Flower and Sohail authored a chanceless opening stand to take a large bite out of the deficit. Hick was magnificent again, punching trademark drives all over the ground, and Nathan Astle also helped himself to a hundred.  The game was miraculously saved.

Ryan's Allstars versus Logan Village CC

 

Another procession for the impressive Allstars: Stephen Waugh led the team to victory with a hundred in each innings, and Archie McLaren and Sunil Gavaskar both reached three figures. McLaren and Waugh also enjoyed a stand of 202, coming at a time when Logan sniffed a way back at 12/3 – after that the game was all but over.

AllroundersXI versus Albert t.o.w.

 

Frank Tyson has undoubtedly been enjoying a grand season for Albert this year, but his destruction of high flying Allrounders was absolutely irresistible, and clearly his best bowling performance of the year.  In 26 overs of mayhem Tyson removed all of the Allrounders batsmen bar danger-men Richards and Loxton, who both fell to Steel.  On the rare occasions when the Allrounders’ top order has failed this year, the late middle order has always come up big, but today nobody had an answer to Tyson.  To make matters worse Hutton and Sohail put on 150 for the first wicket in the Albert reply, and a canny knock from old WG at number nine steered the underdogs over 400, despite 7 wickets for Schwarz.  For good measure Tyson took another four Allrounder scalps in the second innings, to seal an astonishing innings victory over a team that until last week had looked magnificent.

Coights Heroes versus Aussie Gurus

 

Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.  Dennis Lillee slashed his way through the Coights order in the first knock, a score of 225 only being attained through the diligence of Claude Carter.  The Gurus hopes of building on this start were dashed early though, and they were unable to take a lead.  While Lillee was busy taking the four wickets he needed for his 10fer, Mitchell stood firm to the tune of 132 priceless runs, setting a daunting target of 300 plus…. Darling and Marsh briefly threatened, but the Gurus never really looked like making the total.
