AllroundersXI versus Ryan's Allstars
The season resumed with a bang, top versus second
place. The Allrounders started solidly
enough, posting a decent looking 318: Barnes took 5 more wickets in the first
innings to move to 39 on the season.
Shaun Pollock ripped out the heart of the Allstars’ reply, and only a
gritty unbeaten 49 from Alan Davidson salvaged respectability. A first innings lead of 99 should have been
enough for the league’s top team, and with a further 368 (including a splendid
hundred from Frank Iredale) the game looked safe. Thrillingly, Ken “Slasher” Mackay played an innings that made a
winning at least possible, then with number 10 Toshack playing like a man used
to winning test matches every day and Sam Loxton compiling an increasingly
gutsy 121 not out the impossible fourth innings target was breached – an
incredible win for the new leaders.

Logan Village CC versus Albert t.o.w.
Geoff Marsh’s unattractive 107, aided by a
nonchalant 45 from ‘Keeper Healy, gave Logan a total to play with in the first
innings. After they’d teetered to 124-6 on the first morning things had looked
a little iffy for the Village as Tyson and Steel bowled an impeccable line all
day. Albert t.o.w. were perhaps a
little foolhardy in their aggressive reply, posting a rapid 200 but losing the
full set of wickets in doing so. The spinning fingers of Carl Hooper then
twirled Albert into a winning position, which Ponting and Astle capitalized on
with some nicely judged batting, posting a winning partnership of 183.

Wally's Wonders versus Coights Heroes
Due for both a victory and a contribution from Chris
Cairns, Wally’s got both in an impressive display against fellow strugglers
Coights. A swift Ryder hundred, 80 from
Vijay Majrekar and a studied 65 from Cairns formed the pillar of the Wonders’
497. The Heroes hiccupped to 217 in reply, with Gibbs at last showing the sort
of form long expected of him from Wally’s.
Forced to follow on, Les Ames dug in and refused to be budged, but sadly
ran out of partners. He’d steered the
Heroes to 400 though, which gave the Wonders a banana skin target of 123 to win. Indeed, at 1 for 1, 33 for 4 and 60 for 5 it
did look as though we had a game on our hands, but Ryder and Fender sorted out
the mess and drove the Wonders to their first win of the year.

Aussie Gurus versus Brendan's Team
Another bottom of the table encounter saw the Aussie
Gurus batter Brendan’s Team into an ugly defeat. Faced with a hefty 577 (everyone chipping in) Brendan’s had to at
least show a little diligence in their first knock, but one batsman after
another lost his head and the innings was over in 46 overs. Hick was the last man standing and might
have expected more from a loaded supporting cast of Waugh, Sohail, Bevan, Astle
and Tendulkr. They scratched around for 299 in the follow-on innings, including
a hundred from Waugh and 30 from Mullaly (yes that’s right!), but the result
wasn’t really in doubt and the Guru’s won without bother.
